I live in the
beautiful but very isolated city of Perth in Western Australia,
right on the edge of the Indian Ocean.
I started out at the age of 21 owning a salon with a floor space of
just 15 square meters, with a budget of $5000. Yep, that’s all.
Despite this modest beginning we were soon too busy for our VERY
small premises, so I then moved on to my second salon, Le Beau
Beauty Salon at Kardinya Park Shopping Centre, with 35 square meters
and a budget $15000. This was soon also extremely successful, but I
WANTED MORE.
It was still too small...I found more space at the same shopping
centre, 69 square meters now...but now I also had the idea of
opening a fantastic day spa as well as my beauty salon. All the
possibilities...
My SHOCKING
Wake-up Call
Right in the
middle of this, I suffered a brain hematoma, which is a serious and
life threatening condition that requires immediate medical
attention.
(A brain hematoma occurs when a blood vessel ruptures between your
skull and your brain. Blood then leaks, and the collection of blood
(hematoma), possibly clotted, compresses your brain tissue.)
I immediately was taken into hospital for an operation and recovery.
Despite having a paralysed leg I was so keen to get back to building
my day spa that I pushed myself, surprising doctors with 3 weeks
rehabilitation instead of the predicted 6 months.
I don't know if
you have ever suffered a serious medical condition, but this very
scary experience changed my whole outlook on life. I certainly
learned a new appreciation of life and loved ones, brought about by
the possibility of losing everything. I wish everyone could learn
this lesson without the trauma, as it pushed me into taking risks
and really going for it.
Don't say 'What if...?' - say 'How do I...?'!
My new motto is
“Why leave things for
tomorrow if they can be done today?” and I think everyone
should adopt a similar attitude so you will never have any regrets.
Our BIG
move
In 2004, I
found a building with 400 square meters floor space. It was a former
oriental supermarket - and it need massive renovations...basically I
started from nothing, with just the bare outside walls.
(I had my first-born, Blake, the day that renovations began!)
I knew that with vision, commitment, and a good business plan I was
going to create a fantastic day spa that would very soon be pulling
in huge amounts of clients and profits.
In November 2004, with my husband Peter and baby boy beside me, I
celebrated an extremely successful opening day.

at the new premises Le Beau has become 2006 ‘Spa Establishment of
the Year’, Pelactiv Platinum Salon, won the Thalgo ‘Premier Salon’

also making money hand-over-fist, just like I knew it would. Last
financial year we brought in 1.5 million dollars. This financial

Can I use the Operations Manual with my own staff?
A.
Yes, that is what I would definitely suggest. In my own spa,
Le Beau Skin and Body Management, I use the Systems for Success operations manual
EVERY DAY.
I make ALL my new staff read every page, and then sign
the agreement at the back before I will allow them to start work
with me.
This is because it contains SO much information that I think is
vital for every employee to learn and understand. It helps everyone work
together as a team, honestly and professionally.
It sets all the procedures and
systems that I require staff to follow precisely to ensure that
the salon runs smoothly and happily. It makes sure that all the staff
understand what kind of customer service both I and the clients expect at
every visit. It describes the procedures for hygiene, cleaning,
sterilisation, setup and maintenance for EVERY treatment room, EVERY piece
of equipment, EVERY service we have. I'm sure you will have a reasonably
similar basic setup, so these guidelines will help you and your staff
immensely.
The manual explains all the important details of staff management. This is for both you and
the staff, as I have found that when it is all set out from the beginning
there are many fewer problems, and the staff realise your expectations
(yes, which should be very high!) This includes information and
